Azoundria has existed for a long time before it moved online, mainly because it was one of the few available domain names. Originally Azoundria referred to a phonetical writing system, designed to fix all the spelling and pronounciation variations and indescrepencies. In Azoundrian, each letter, instead of representing any number of sounds, represents just one sound. In English, the letter 'a' sometimes make a soft 'a' and sometimes a hard 'a' and, when combined with a 'w' as in 'thaw' it makes a soft 'o' sound. When you write in Azoundrian, there is one character, named 'az', which always makes the soft 'a' sound. There are a total of 40 characters, called phonetts, in the phonetta. In the earliest version of Azoundrian, each character was in a circle around the sound, and combining 'around' and 'sound' somehow created the original version of the writing system. Later, a better version was made by removing the circles, and again by using the ordinary english letters.
The first use of a circle character such as those in the first version of Azoundrian was originally proposed for a simple cypher in 2000 by one of my classmates. I wrote out a cypher of circle characters, before going phonettical. I did have a section to teach Azoundrian a while ago but it didn't get much popularity so i gave up on it. If there is interest to learn Azoundrian, I can easily be contacted. I might rebuild the section. The website existed as an offline collection of HTML files for a while, before I got free hosting. Names in Geocities are scarce, and finding good ones is an artform I have only started to get good at. Azoundria was the best name I found during registration. Geocities Every website starts somewhere, and for the first two years of this site, from 2003 to 2005, the URL was http://www.geocities.com/azoundria. I did not have much success in the first year. Almost all of my 400 visitors were friends and family, with approximately 200 of them being me. I took the obvious conclusion that I lacked content, and added some. I listed all the appropriate games not yet blocked at school for my classmates, and later added the jokes section. Things picked up a little, but not much. Looking back on the original site, I can conclude it was most likely my excessive use of frames that lowered my popularity. I started with just 4 frames, but, in adding more content, I expanded that frameset until there was only a tiny area for the main content. I even used the frameset to create 'gradients' out of pages with multiple background colours and no content. While this was my main problem, unreadable menu buttons and logo added to the mess. Broken images and links scattered the pages. I did not know how to advertise a site, or get other people's opinions of it on the web back then. With no input, the majority of monitors I saw high resolution(the main area was bigger in higher resolution), and non-measurable results, I concluded maybe the problem lied in the length of my URL, misspelled by many of my classmates. Improvements Since I got my first review from Ozzu, my site has never been the same. Although original results were very grim, I never really got discouraged. Originally I thought maybe by removing some of those extra gadgets on my pages I could shape things up, but soon it became apparent that I would have to scrap frames altogether. But how to have the menu easy to update was still a problem, and how to get a logo and consistent layout for every page that I could easily change when I wanted to. I learned basic PHP, and since I was lucky enough to have registered with a host that allowed it, I was able to easily include HTML pages storing my layout. So, the site was redone, and except for keeping the HTML of the games section and the original Derek's Jokes section, everything was changed. As of Late... Tracking my sites growth is something I do mostly because I am curious. Because my ratings bounce up and down so much, it's really very difficult to derive anything from it. I recieved a record amount of traffic for my Happyland Maps section, and am still recieving a large amount of traffic to it. It was linked on the front page of Free Lunch Design and still have a link in their Extra Maps section. Most recently Exploring Azoundria has achieved a status as the second most popular section with over 900 players! Old Updates This page has a listing of events related to Azoundria's founding. If you're looking for the most recent updates click here. This page is mostly just a large log I kept. I decided to put it online a long time ago and haven't removed it.
